Choosing the right plastic surgeon for tummy tuck surgery

Is your plastic surgeon certified and qualified?

You’d think that researching your surgeon’s qualifications would be simple. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

For example, did you know that there is actually a huge difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon?

While all plastic surgeons are cosmetic surgeons, not all cosmetic surgeons are plastic surgeons.

Long story short: to become a qualified plastic surgeon, you have to undergo an additional 8-10 years postgraduate surgical training. Half of these years are spent in surgical training – the other in specialty Plastic and Reconstructive surgery training.

By contrast, to become a cosmetic surgeon you need a basic medical degree – and no additional or specialist training.

Your plastic surgeon should be affiliated with the Australian Medical Council and be a member of the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).

You need to check if they are a member of FRACS to be sure that they have the experience and qualification to perform your tummy tuck procedure.

It can also be as simple as checking to see whether they refer to themselves as a plastic or cosmetic surgeon – if they refer to themselves only as a cosmetic surgeon, you should be aware of this – as you might like to look elsewhere.

Check out your surgeon’s work experience

Has your surgeon performed tummy tuck surgery before? And more importantly, did they do a good job?

Luckily, it’s pretty easy to see for yourself now – you have a range of options you can use to check out your surgeon’s work experience:

  • Reviews
  • Recommendations
  • Case studies
  • Before and after photos

During your initial conversations, be sure to ask about previous tummy tuck procedures, as well as their work experience – this will give you an idea of what they can do for you.

And if possible, ask to see pictures – nothing comes quite as close to seeing their outcomes with your own eyes!

Choose a surgeon that specialises in tummy tuck surgery

Not all surgeons specialise in all types of surgeries. It’s likely they focus on a few core areas, such as breast surgery, tummy tucks (and mummy makeovers), and skin cancer surgery.

If you’ve settled on body surgery such as abdominoplasty (the formal name for tummy tucks), it’s important you choose a plastic surgeon who specialises in body surgery.

Not only does this ensure that your procedure itself goes off without a hitch – it also means that they’re able to more accurately assess what type of tummy tuck you need.

There are two types of tummy tucks:

  • Partial tummy tuck: a less-invasive procedure targeted at loose skin and fat below the belly button
  • Full tummy tuck (or full abdominoplasty): a procedure that removes loose skin from a broader part of the stomach

Which type of tummy tuck surgery is right for you? It depends on how your belly looks, and what you want to achieve with plastic surgery.

Whatever it is, a plastic surgeon who specialises in tummy tuck surgery can help you figure out what you need.

Choose a plastic surgeon who knows how important the experience is

Trust is a must for every patient-surgeon relationship.

And trust is built up through a comfortable relationship, where your surgeon is upfront, honest, understanding, and knowledgeable.

When you are comfortable with your surgeon, communication and honesty is  easy between the two of you.

You should be able to state all your questions and concerns without any inhibitions, and your surgeon should be able to answer them one by one.

Further, your plastic surgeon should be honest and realistic.

Every surgery carries risks – and if your surgeon is dancing around the topic or guaranteeing results, we suggest finding another.

That isn’t the only part of the experience that matters, however.

When it comes to matters involving your body, you want someone who is upfront and honest, but who also is tactful and treats your case with the attention and care you expect.
