Cairns Plastic Surgery shares: how to prepare for a Mummy Makeover

There are very few things more exciting than the glow that comes with being a new mum.

You’ll be feeling excited, nervous and let’s face it, very physically drained.

As any mum will tell you, raising a newborn can take a lot out of you. And it isn’t just your energy levels that suffer – you’ll also see a host of physical changes following childbirth.

While following a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can help speed the process up, results aren’t going to appear overnight. In fact, many of which can take months (or even years) to subside.

As a result, the “Mummy Makeover” has become a popular method among women who want to restore their bodies to their pre-pregnancy state.

What’s involved in Mummy Makeover surgery?

A Mummy Makeover isn’t a single procedure – rather, it’s a series of procedures performed during one operation.

Specifically, we’re talking about plastic surgery procedures that focus on reverting the most common physical changes that come with pregnancy. Most Mummy Makeovers include:

  • Tummy tuck
  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift
  • Breast reduction

Preparing for your Mummy Makeover

Just like any other plastic surgery procedure, you’ll want to make sure your Mummy Makeover goes off without a hitch.

And when it comes to any cosmetic or plastic surgery, preparation is key.

When preparing for your Mummy Makeover, you may need to make adjustments to your daily routine and family, and start preparing a plan for your recovery following your makeover.

You are what you eat: it all starts with proper nutrition

While modern surgery techniques are considerably safer (and much less painful) than in the past, one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a healthy diet.

A healthy diet provides your body with the essential nutrients and vitamins that you need to recover from your Mummy Makeover procedure, and reduces the risk of complications.

In particular, we recommend upping your iron intake. Consider taking iron supplements and eating more green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Protein promotes cell growth, and can be found in eggs, meat and fish. Don’t worry vegetarians, you can find your own protein in products like seeds, nuts and quinoa.

Prepare your wardrobe

You’re coming in for a cosmetic procedure – as such, comfort is key.

We recommend packing a duffel bag full of comfortable clothing. In particular, we suggest:

  • Pants with a lot of stretch and elasticity in the waistband
  • Button or zip-up shirt that grants easy access to your chest and stomach

And if you don’t have them already, we strongly advise buying a set of compression clothing.

Not only are they comfortable and snug, but they may assist in your recovery by:

  • Controlling postoperative swelling
  • Reducing fluid build-up
  • Providing structure and maintaining shape
  • Improving scarring

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Your body needs adequate time to recover – it’s going through major surgery, and as such, warrants a slow and full recovery.

You need rest to ensure a healthy recovery. As such, you may want to hire a helper, or ask a friend or relative to take care of house chores, run errands and help care for baby while you’re busy resting up.

It’s also a good idea to talk to your workplace about what sorts of accommodations can be made to minimise the strain on your body and assist with your recovery as you reach the point where you are well enough to return to work.

Kick the habit: cut smoking and drinking out of your life

This should be a no-brainer!

In addition to being a bad idea while breastfeeding (and in the case of smoking, not being a very healthy habit in general), they may also interfere with your surgery and subsequently affect your recovery time.

Needless to say, immediately following your Mummy Makeover is as good a time as any to kick the habit.

Make your home clean and convenient after surgery

Recovery after a Mummy Makeover can take quite some time. You may experience discomfort, soreness, and tiredness as your body heals from surgery.

While these feelings will pass, that doesn’t make living with them any easier. Before undergoing your procedure, we recommend cleaning up your home and reorganising everything so that the essentials are never out of reach.
