In laser skin resurfacing, an erbium laser emits light that vaporises the upper layers of damaged skin.
Laser skin resurfacing can improve the appearance of the skin by removing surface blemishes, pigmentation and fine wrinkles b y removing the damaged outer layers of skin and allowing new skin to regenerate.
Laser skin resurfacing is performed to help:
- Smooth fine lines and wrinkles of the face
- Smooth and tighten lower eyelid skin and crow’s feet around the eyes
- Soften lines around the mouth and top lip wrinkles
- Remove brown spots
- Improve and flatten scars
- Improve skin tone and texture that has acne scarring
A general anaesthetic is recommended for full face laser resurfacing. Smaller areas such as around the mouth and eyes or scar treatment can be performed with local anaesthetic.
Following skin resurfacing the treated areas are kept moist with ointment for several days to a week after surgery until the damaged skin sloughs off and the new skin grows in. It will take up to two weeks for your face to heal after this procedure.
The treated areas of skin will be pink for up to six weeks.
The treated sites MUST be protected from sun exposure for at least six months after the procedure.
Risks include infection, pigment changes and scarring.
